Deck of the Day: Captain Sisay’s Legendary Slow-Mo Parade
Welcome to DeckStir’s Best Roast feature, where we lovingly toast the most “unique” brews the format has to offer. Today’s deck is less a well-oiled machine and more a legendary tricycle with one square wheel and a handlebar made out of Heroes' Podium. If you’ve ever dreamed of watching a Captain Sisay deck take the scenic route, stroll through all its legendary friends, and politely excuse itself from doing anything too threatening—well, you’re in for a treat. Or at least a parade. A very, very slow parade.
The Commander
Let’s start with the captain herself: Captain Sisay. This legendary Selesnya icon from Invasion has an ability that reads like a dare: “Tap: Search your library for a legendary card, reveal that card, and put it into your hand. Then shuffle.” In most lists, Sisay is a powerhouse, fetching up toolbox answers, silver-bullet threats, or combo pieces at warp speed.
Here… she’s more like the world’s most enthusiastic HR manager, dedicated to calling every legendary employee into the office one at a time, even if they’re all on vacation. There’s no haste, no untap shenanigans beyond a lonely Thousand-Year Elixir, and not much in the way of “wincon” urgency. Sisay is ready to work—if you’re okay with your game plan moving at a pace that would make a glacial ferry blush.
Game Plan
The stated strategy? Tutor up legendary jank like it’s a lifestyle. And to this deck’s credit, it sticks the landing—face-first into a pile of niche, historic permanents. Each Sisay activation gives you a chance to ask, “Is this the most sideways way to solve my problem?” Let’s peruse some of the stars:
- Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite: When you finally get there after five turns of setup and a heroic commitment to not missing land drops, you can give your team some buffs and shrink enemy creatures. Just in time for everyone else to have already developed board wipes.
- Kogla, the Titan Ape: A legendary ape for all occasions. Need to punch something? Kogla’s got you. Need to bounce Sisay so you can replay her and not use her ability for a turn? Kogla's also got you.
- Glissa Sunseeker and Heroes’ Podium: Why destroy artifacts with efficient removal when you can set up a three-card Rube Goldberg machine that requires you to tap creatures with specific total power, and then only if the planets align?
- Kamahl’s Druidic Vow: There’s always the hope you’ll ramp enough to “go big.” Good luck with that on 33 lands and the kind of ramp package that would make a precon blush.
- Sun Titan and Eternal Witness: Recursion? Yes! Winning? We’ll get back to you next week.
You do have some support pieces, like Lightning Greaves—to protect Sisay until her next tap session—and Thousand-Year Elixir, which is the deck’s idea of going “turbo.” There’s also a smattering of ramp (Rampant Growth, Sakura-Tribe Elder), but with only 33 lands, you’ll be seeing more mulligans than meaningful plays.
Synergy Showcase
If there’s a through line, it’s “legends matter.” Heroes’ Podium somehow made the cut, boosting your legendary creatures in a manner that is both symmetrical and existential. Time of Need, Eladamri’s Call, and Search for Glory ensure that, should Sisay ever suffer from carpal tunnel, you can still find your best legends—like Kolvori, God of Kinship, whose text box is a monument to aspiration.
Power & Bracket
Let’s address the mana dork in the room: This deck is a 0/10 on the power scale, firmly in Bracket 1. Why? Well, in a world where precons ramp, draw cards, and sometimes even win, this list dares to say, “What if I used fewer lands, less interaction, and prioritized flavor over function?” The “combo” (if you can call it that) is as fast as continental drift. There’s no Stax lock, no infinite value loop, not even an all-in, all-or-nothing superfriends plan.
Instead, you’ll be tutoring up legendary permanents slowly and methodically, like a parade of historic figures who’ve each stopped to tie their shoes. Expect to have plenty of time to chat with your podmates, because you won’t be threatening anyone’s life total—or attention span.
Should You Build It?
Look, not every deck needs to be a cutthroat cEDH monster. If your idea of Commander is taking a walking tour through Magic’s storied history—at a pace best described as “museum audio guide”—then Captain Sisay’s Legendary Slow-Mo Parade is a perfect fit. You’ll fetch legends, you’ll watch the real threats duke it out, and you’ll always have a weird, janky answer just one Sisay tap away… assuming you draw lands.
For everyone else? Maybe take a leaf from Sisay’s book and tutor up a more focused decklist. But if you want to host the slowest, most respectable parade in the multiverse, this is your captain speaking—and she’s in no hurry.
DeckStir out. Keep your legends close, and your win conditions closer.
